Instruments | The Electric Guitar
So I don’t play the electric guitar- I wish I did. I imagine that it’s much like the acoustic guitar and if I can create a riff on my acoustic, I can probably do so with the electric. That being said, if there is one instrument that ties all my songs together, that would be the electric. Some might think it’s a surprising choice for a folk singer-songwriter. But to me, it’s important that all my songs contain an electric guitar portion, even if the part is very small.
My fascination with the electric guitar comes from listening to my favourite band of all time- U2. The Edge creates the most astounding guitar riffs I have ever heard. I really cannot imagine any U2 songs without The Edge’s magical touch. I have been through many musical phases in my life, times when I only listened to alternative rock, then the Beatles, then old-time jazz, then Frank Sinatra, then to 60’s/70’s classic rock, and now to indie music. Yet through out all these phases, I have continued to listen to U2. I’m not exactly sure why, but their music (minus the Pop album, which is a total flop in my opinion) continues to touch me, and I never get sick of it. I have been listening to their music for more than half my lifetime.
That’s why I love the electric guitar and I love the sound that it produces in my songs. I guess it’s my way of trying to replicate that U2 magic in my music that only the electric guitar can produce.
