Indie Music | Steve Ison
One of the best finds in my Indie music collection would be this album, Steve Ison’s ‘All the Way Up.’ There is no way to categorize Steve Ison’s music as it transcends so many genres. Perhaps my best shot at classification would be Brit Pop- whatever that means.
I’ve always had a soft spot for British bands and singer-songwriters. I love their unique sound and the history of great music coming from Britain is undeniable. In my opinion, the artists with the strongest influential impact on music all hail from Britain- down from the Beatles to Amy Winehouse. My theory on the success of Brit Pop comes from the fact that British culture entails having a ‘stiff upper lip’. I believe the Brits make music to rebel against this cultural norm. In music, they are free to break from reality and express their emotions, not keeping it in check. You can hear the freedom in their music, and that is what makes their music phenomenal.
This is Ison’s second album and it is pure sweetness to the ears. Steve is an excellent singer-songwriter who comes up with the most unique melodies. He is also a great musician, and his choice of chords and notes are never predictable. Even though this album veers towards alternative rock, surprisingly, it is easy to dance to. A rare feat for a rock album for sure.
