Indie Music | The Civil Wars
I haven’t listened to the radio in over a decade, but I’m always searching for new music. Don’t get me wrong, I love my classics too- the Beatles, Neil Young, The Who, etc., but sometimes, the ears just want to hear a fresh sound. So how have I been able to find new music? Only by happenstance.
There’s so many channels out there- YouTube, SoundCloud, Facebook and the like. But it’s a tedious job filtering all the garbage from the gems. Thanks to technology, anyone can buy a mic, learn to use a DAW, and even make music on GarageBand. In the old days, it was the high cost of recording an album that naturally acted as a filter, but not always. Now that filter is completely gone, thanks to technology.
However, artists like myself are benefitting from all of this. One inspirational band, that is no longer a band now, is the Civil Wars. From the beginning, they sought the indie route and somehow got their music out there. It even won them a Grammy. Their music is absolutely devine, but we all know that it’s not just sheer talent that makes you successful. Their taking the independent route meant they had full control over their work. And that is what every artist thrives for. To be a real artist, you must have artistic integrity. And you must control your art, not be controlled.
That is why I choose the route of an independent artist. Yes, it does have it’s challenges- such as performing various roles. But as a business owner in real life, I am used to that. I’m a big fan of indie music and I look forward to writing about some of these amazing artists I’ve discovered on this blog. Stay tuned!
